Sam Rankin for Congress (testing the water)
 Consistent Message!

The quotes from Sam's previous campaigns and political activity reflect his long knowledge of, and efforts to control, the perils of excessive campaign money and his thoughts on keeping the middle class and the country strong.

March 5, 1977.   Said to President Carter on CBS radio (Walter Cronkite) "Mr. President, I would like your commitment on a resolution in the publics favor that would alleviate the painfully high cost of medical care in the U.S."

October 15, 1982.   Campaign flyer. "Government is headed in a new direction, guided by demands for . . . less government spending. Sam realizes social programs are being forced to compete for shrinking dollars and being asked to make do with less. . . .  We need elected officials who will use people values when making decisions that affect our lives."

October, 1982.    The Montana Democrat  ". . .Democrats must be on guard against those who want to gut good programs. Also, he doesn't approve of substantially increasing the military budget at the expense of social service programs."

June 28, 1985.    Agri-News  "First, we need voters who truly believe there needs to be reduced government spending and closing of loopholes in the tax system. (Same as Simpson-Bowles) Second, we need new political leaders who promise there will be cut-backs, but it will be done fairly"

April 10, 1987.    The Billings Gazette   "For those of us fed up, there is a way: pay attention to the primaries . . . April to June and wipe out the extremists." (Think Tea Party which has no moderates and moderates are what the country needs)

June 1993.    State Common Cause Newsletter   The initiative on the tax increase on a pack of cigarettes was defeated after a media blitz showing the elderly complaining. Turns out the media blitz, $600,000.00 worth of which, 98% was from out of state money. It was a last minute blitz and Montanans didn't have a chance to know who was behind the ads, if they would have, they may have voted different. Excessive money and anonymous donors=bad for the country.

February 16, 1996.      Campaign Flyer.   " Not being obligated to special interests but rather to the people, I can and will say no to excessive demands that hurt the country. I will break the grid lock because I can agree with responsible legislation - i.e. that which is best for the country."

March 2, 2000.     Campaign web site.  "I will fairly represent the people of the state of Montana-not some group from the East coast that does nothing but dangle money in my face. I will renew your faith in government; I will break the grip of special interests."

April 10, 2010    Campaign web site.   " . . . excessive money has done grave damage to the way our country is governed.  . . . because politicians can't compromise out of worry that their 'special interest' friends won't give them campaign money for the next election . . ."

To change Congress, we have to send a different kind of Congressman.
